Students: Why You Should Start Thinking About Your Summer Internship Now

It may be frigid in much of the country still, but that shouldn't stop college students from dreaming of summer — internships, that is. Companies are starting their searches for candidates now, and many have early application deadlines. Dr. Kat Cohen, founder of college consulting company IvyWise, shares four pieces of advice for scoring your dream summer internship. Research — then use — your network of contacts Use parents, friends, your school's alumni network and other job-search sites to connect with individuals who can sit down with you and provide more information about their work. Just like in the college search process, it's helpful to talk to as many people as possible in order to learn more about a specific field, company or internship opportunity. Know your end goal The point of an internship is to explore a particular field to see if you would like to pursue it as an academic major or career, so you should do something that really interests you and builds

How to tailor your resume for an internship

Holding an internship is a big part of summer for college students. We are in the day and age where just having a college degree will not guarantee you a job. Consequently, students have to do extra when it comes to preparing for the real world. That is where an internship comes in. But even before that, comes the application. A key part in applying for internships is the presence of a resume. This piece of paper will make you stand apart from other applicants. And, yes, there will be a lot of them. Where do you even start? Resumes can be scary. The format. What information to put on it. The process can be overwhelming. Relevant Experience The first thing that comes to mind when building a resume is: job experience. However, most college students have had little to none. This is where you have to get creative. For example, you may be applying to a banking internship, but have never set foot inside a bank. Think back to the past. Handling money at a concession stand or balancing a cash

Internship teaches students how to run a business

For many students, having a job when they are out of class during the summer months is not that unusual. But for Mabry Harrison, joining the Young Entrepreneurs across America internship program has not only given her a job, it is teaching her how to run her own business. Harrison is a freshman at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she is studying mathematical decision sciences among other things. She joined the program, which selects students, trains them and then gives them the resources to run their own business, after a presentation in one of her business classes. “I became involved when a speaker came into my class and asked if we would like to make money while running your own business,” Harrison said. “That really got my interest, so I went to the informational meeting and signed up. After two separate interviews, they hired me.” In the program, students receive an exterior painting service to run including coming up with business plans, marketing plans, hirin

78-year-old grandfather starts an internship

Grandfather Ken Holmes believes he could be one of the oldest interns in the world. At 78-years-old, the granddad-of-two decided he’d embark on a new career. He started where many entry-level staff do, an internship. Holmes, from Australia, has been helping out at the Mercy Place Aged Care facility in Victoria, where he assists in making life comfortable for the elderly residents. He spent 30 years of his career working as a surgical and scientific toolmaker at Melbourne University. He later switched to personal care for a decade before giving up employment to look after his wife Beatrice. Holmes told Mashable: ‘I haven’t told my kids what I’m doing because I know what they would say… that I should be at home. ‘But my advice to anyone else my age that is still fit and healthy is to go back to work.’ He added: ‘I’m doing this course for myself. I’m tired of talking to my dogs and cats who don’t talk back.’ He says his favorite part of the internship is working with older people. And he

Will An Internship Abroad Guarantee More Employment Opportunities

There’s no questioning the fact that the world is a more connected place now more than any other time in history. And it’s only going to be more so in the future. Take me for an example. I am writing this in Sydney, Australia. It will be published by Kathrin, who is in London. And read by people all over the world. That kind of reach for people like me was unthinkable just 10 years ago. It’s easier than ever to do business internationally. We all know the majority of products are manufactured in China. Sophisticated software programs are coded in India. And many administrative tasks are outsourced to the Philippines. But until 10 years or so ago, only huge corporations could do that. You see, the barrier to set up a branch overseas prevented many small businesses to reach markets other than their own, let alone do all those things. Today… let’s just say I was part of the team of a startup who did $30 million in annual revenue by selling to 34 countries… with but 4 employees. And the mo

Internship scheme is 'instant success'

A COLLEGE is planning to offer more graduate internships after its first two recruits landed permanent jobs there. Vicky Heywood and Kathy Jackson secured the 12-week placements at Stoke-on-Trent College through a scheme run by Keele University. It meant they could put their degree skills to good use by getting involved in projects and providing key support to staff. Now both of them have stayed on at the college. Twenty-two-year-old Vicky, from Basford, said: "The internships are a good way of supporting graduates. "It can be hard to get into graduate work, but this has helped me into permanent employment. "I'm now an apprenticeship admissions officer and have been thoroughly enjoying it." After graduating with a degree in politics and sociology from Keele, she applied to join the internships scheme. It operates a bit like a recruitment agency, with Keele offering employers a range of candidates to choose from, who match the skills they are looking for in the w

How to fit an internship into your busy schedule

Between your classes, work and co-curricular activities, it might seem impossible to fit an internship into your schedule this spring. But it might land you a great gig after graduation. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), 51.7% of internships convert to full-time jobs. If your schedule is insanely busy, don’t worry — it is still possible to complete an internship. Consider some of the following suggestions: Be the architect of your schedule. In many organizations, interns establish their work schedules. This flexibility permits you to work around your other activities. Engage in a meaningful discussion with your supervisor to create a win-win for everyone involved. If you are earning academic credit for your experience, touch base with your faculty advisor to identify the minimum number of hours that you must complete. Prioritize your time. Explore the possibility of scaling back your student activities or consider reducing your course load to onl

3-habits-of-successful-interns-and-internship-programs

Internship programs can seem daunting, especially when they're new. It's a good idea to think about what you're getting into, whether you're a manager overseeing a new program or a prospective intern looking for an opportunity of a lifetime. A little preparation can make sure that everyone gets what they want out of the experience. 1. Know Your Goals For managers: Know what do you want interns to actually accomplish at the office, before they arrive. Remember that internships for college credit have to be for the educational benefit of the interns, so no fair sticking them by the copy machine all day long. If they're working on a specific project, what do you want them to contribute? For interns: Just like in Stephen R. Covey's classic 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, interns also need to "begin with the end in mind." What's the point of the internship? What do you hope to get out of the experience? Hopefully, you're not just after college

Internship. Check. Job Offer. Check. Career That Is Fulfilling...?

If you are a college student, the process of applying for jobs is relatively simple. You go to your university's career service website, see what employers have job postings, click apply to any jobs that seem interesting and wait to see if you get a response from any of the employers for an interview. You could also test your luck at career fairs where hundreds of students pour into a venue to have really intimidating, forced and, for the most part, the same 1-3 minute conversation with recruiters at companies you think you might be interested. Performing both of these actions is relatively simple, and if you are lucky and have a good elevator pitch, you may land an interview. During this time period of "oh, I should probably apply for jobs" to "Alright! I have 3 interviews," how much have you learned about any of the opportunities you have applied for? Sure, you may have read a brief 100-200 word description of the employers on a career service website, along

6 Reasons to Take the Unpaid Internship

There it is the perfect internship. A brilliant company, wonderful coworkers, opportunities abound. This is it … until you read the print at the bottom. Unpaid. You groan at the thought of more ramen noodles and threaten to forget the listing altogether. But wait, before you do, there are some things you should consider. Here are six reasons why you should take the unpaid internship. 1. Experience We all know the word spoken again and again in interviews, boardrooms, and resume building classes. Say it with me: experience. Currently, the job market is so competitive that even entry level positions will require some true work experience in the field. Recent college graduates will complain relentlessly about said prerequisites, but they probably weren’t the ones that took the unpaid internship. Instead, they may have sought out paid positions, which is fine, money is important after all, but in the long run, maybe not so smart. Experience will speak volumes over any other qualification:

5 Best Types of Internships For College Seniors

Whether you’re in your last year of college or even your last semester of undergrad, it’s not too late to look into internships for college seniors. Having an internship allows you to get work experience, gain important skills, and make connections that may serve you well upon your graduation. Here are the best types of internships for college seniors which you may want to keep in mind if you’re considering applying for or accepting an internship. 1. Internships in your area of interest. As a college senior, you’ve definitely decided on a major and have taken the necessary classes to fulfill that major — but what do you intend to do with your degree? For some majors, like biology on a pre-med track, your path may be clearer, but for those who majored in English, psychology, music, etc., your career options are probably much more varied and you may not have quite decided what you’re going to do with your degree. Having an internship in your area of interest as a college senior will no
