HL: Opinion: Unpaid internships

Internships are about the experience, not the pay. The thought of doing an unpaid internship sounds terrible, but internships are practically mandatory nowadays. Lots of students acquire internships for professional work experience or as a resume builder. However, whether it’s paid or not is a big deal. There are a lot of factors that come along with receiving an internship, paid or not. Such as a student’s major, school, availability, resume, etc. The better internships are the ones where you get paid for the work you do. Internships are still a huge stepping stone into the competitive work force, paid or not. It’s hard to get an internship in the first place, worrying about if it’s paid or not should be your last concern. You may be working for nothing, but it’s the next step you should be thinking about. Students who have applied or interviewed for internships would rather have an unpaid internship involving their career background instead of a part time summer job. Internships can lead to jobs and eventually pay off in the long run. Internships, paid or not, are mutually beneficial for students seeking professional career experience and for employers seeking help with their company, even though, most interns don’t receive jobs at their intern organization. Unpaid internships are difficult on the interns. Students come out of college with tons of debt; debt they can't pay off on an unpaid internship. It’s about the experience. Internships, paid or not, do help students progress in their career field and make connections. Overall it depends on your outlook. Obviously, you want an internship that pays a decent wage, but that’s not always possible. The majority of internships don’t pay. There does come a point where enough is enough. Some companies just take advantage of unpaid interns. Unpaid internships are free labor. Students and young adults complain about unpaid internships. Even people who haven’t done internships complain about how they need to do an internship. Unpaid internships can still allow students to enhance their career skills and make professional connections in their field. It’s important to do multiple internships, whether they are paid or not.
